The topics at the Create 2005 Lecture Series were as follows:
1. “One of a Kind - the Ultimate in Quality?" by John Makepeace
One of the greatest living furniture designer-makers, John Makepeace was a founding member of the UK's Crafts Council and a leading exponent of the British Craft Revival. He was the founder of Parnham Trust which, between 1977 and 2000, educated a generation of designers and makers who have established businesses worldwide. His studio concentrates on commissions for private and corporate clients in the UK, Europe and the USA while his work can be found in major museum collections in Europe and North America.

2. "The actual making is the easy part, can you run a business?" by Andrew Varah
Andrew Varah established his workshops in 1974 as a lone bespoke maker. After 5 years he employed 1 maker and now he employs 5. He was external examiner at Letterfrack Furniture College for 9 years, and on the advisory panel at Rycotewood Furniture College for 13 years.
He became a liveryman in The Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers in 1996 and was awarded 6 Guild Marks while in 2003 he was awarded the Christopher Claxton Stevens award for the best Guild mark piece in that year.
Andrew Varah’s furniture is displayed, and sold, in 2 galleries in the USA, one in Florida & one in Kentucky.

3. ‘A brief history of designer makers’ & ‘Design and Innovation – ‘Simplicity rules’ by Jeremy Broun
Having originally trained as a Handicrafts teacher Jeremy Broun is a self-taught designer who established a small furniture workshop in 1973. In 1980 he sold work at the First Sale of Contemporary British Crafts at Sotheby's. He has received numerous awards and his extensive lectures include Australia, Finland and at the London Design Museum. He is a seasoned author and also makes films under the label 'Thinking Hand Video'. Currently he is producing a DVD called 'Furniture Today'.
